Hardtop Asphalt Paving – Common Problems and Solutions

Posted on June 7, 2024June 13, 2024 by n01a

Asphalt Paving is a complex process that should only be trusted to experienced professionals. Asphalt is a mixture of aggregates (like sand and crushed stone) bound together by bitumen, which is derived from crude oil. It’s mixed and layered onto the surface of a lot or road before being rolled, graded, compacted, and finally sealed. The right techniques can help make the finished product look great and last longer.

Asphalt Paving: Techniques and Best Practices

An important part of the asphalt paving process is the base course, which is a layer installed prior to laying asphalt. It’s designed to evenly distribute traffic and environmental loading so that underlying unbound layers don’t experience excessive stresses and strains. A successful base course will achieve a balance of stability and durability by using stiff binders, high stone-on-stone contact, and adequate fatigue resistance.

Another vital aspect of a good asphalt pavement is the use of additives. Many different materials have been tested and used to add softness, improve the low-temperature grade, or reduce the amount of petroleum in an asphalt mix. Typical additives include emulsions, waxes, and zeolites. However, the addition of these materials may decrease the overall performance of the asphalt mix. In fact, several states and the federal highway administration impose physical tests that effectively ban the use of recycled asphalt oil binder (REOB).

Other tools needed to lay asphalt include pavers, rollers, and screeds. The paver is used to spread and smooth the asphalt, while rollers use vibration or weight to compress the material. Lastly, the screed is a tool that helps to level and smooth the surface of a newly paved road or driveway.
