The theme of this psalm 91 is the assurance that God keeps his children safe from all kinds of dangers. It could be the terror of a wild animal that roars in the night, or a plague that strikes a village, or even a war that destroys homes and lives. This psalm is set against this backdrop of harsh realities, and the psalmist declares confidently that God’s shelter (verses 1-6) and shadow (verses 7-16) are his people’s safety.
God’s protection is complete and total – there are no exceptions. He will keep us safe from a thousand or even ten thousand arrows that fly by night, and if disease or death come near us, he will take care of it. It is a truly bold declaration of faith that assures believers that God is our refuge, fortress and stronghold.
